I still can't see the problem. If it uses a lot of other CPAN
modules, that is
a Good Thing(tm), because it uses other pieces of usually tested and
maintened
pieces of software. Probably the Archive::Ar module covers everything
you
thought and didn't thought about dealing with ar files.
Think a bit about it, and see that you don't have to reinvent the wheel,
install a couple of prerequisites modules and spend your time doing
something
fun :-)
