It seems like you think that x{y} syntax used in a regex can be used
elsewhere -- nope. Instead, you need to use the 'x' operator. As your
code is now, Perl thinks you are working with the %1 hash.
s/(\w)\((\d+)\)/$1 x $2/eg;
