Try the program dos2unix...I've noticed a bunch of posts talking about getting rid
of ^M or whatever, but I think this does it in one shot from the command line. I've
used it with great success. From the man page:

dos2unix - convert text file from DOS format to ISO format.

FreeBSD is so rich with utilities I'd be amazed if you don't have it on your box.

If THAT doesn't work, try entering the code by hand. Also consider dumping the
buffer with $|=1; in your scripts.
