Hi all,
Talking about PHP, someone asked me to tell him why is PHP better and why it is used more than Perl. I don't know what to tell him because I don't know PHP, but I've seen that it is used more and more and I guess that there are more PHP scripts than Perl scripts now, so I think he could be right.
Of course, he was talking about CGI programming, because I know that Perl can do much more than CGI programming like PHP.
As much as we jest at your expense I suppose a "real" answer should be given, well other than drieux's long rant about MVC and layers ;-). The reason why this is a flame war question is because no right answer exists. The closest answer is "whatever works best in your situation". The problem with this answer is there are at least a hundred different factors in determining what your situation is, and even if you could define it that explicitly there would still be overlap of features, etc. There are all range of PHP/Perl advocates that can spout off a list of reasons why one is preferred to the other, but the ones that understand them the best are the ones that don't say anything because they know that there is no reason to argue in the first place. They also know that there is no true way to gauge how much one or the other is being used, so to say that one has more market/mind-share than the other is sillier than debating which one is better, not to mention that even if one could gauge this, would it really change what is best for you because more people are using the other? Way more people use Windows than Linux, does that make it better for me?
Of course we all know the real truth, Vbscript/ASP/.NET is *clearly* the best... that will be $300.00 please...
