I had a look at this kind of thing a while back, and I'm happy to say I got it to work, but not with Internet Explorer. Do a search on Google for the phrase "server push" and optionally you could include Internet Explorer (this gave me an article from Microsoft Support detailing how to implement a Server Push with ASP - it also talks about "Client Pull" as a possibility).
