Subject: Source for beginners help required

G'Day,
I'm looking to start in perl, and coming from assembly on pic
chips,
this is all greek to me. I see a lot of people getting flamed and told
to
"read the perldoc" but have no idea where I would find it! I'm not
interested in buying books yet (I don't know how I'm going to get on
with
this) so would like some VERY basic help on opening external files etc.
Is
there a web address anyone could provide, where the basics of perl are
clearly explained?

        Thanks for your help
            Clive Knowles
