In another life I managed a software project to develop a suite of EDI business offerings. Good programmers are artists. The image that most are *holes comes from how they interact with people who are ignorant and don't know it. Its like marketing walking in and throwing the 1,000 change on the table un-doing 100s of manhours of work just because they forgot to tell us something. If you want to know what its like go to the nearest nursing home and pick out three of the patients at random and then try to explain C pointer arithmetic to them. Then do that every day for a year and see if you don't get a reputation for being an *hole. I hope to get into a situation where I do.
