I have never seen those, but I haven't tried hand-editing ~/.balsa/config.
Just tried hand editing the config file, with entries UseSystemFonts=false MessageFont=Nimbus Mono PS 25 SubjectFont=Nimbus Mono PS Bold 25 and again I get horrific text and no warnings!
