I suspect you have used USB drives in the past and found them far too slow, but I suggest you revisit that. Newer USB drives are not fast, but they are faster than they once were. I see around 120 MB/s write speeds. For my purposes, they are good enough for my off-site backups.

There are some advantages with USB as a medium for off-site backups:

    -  They do NOT require a good SAS controller and can be used on pretty much anything that can run Bacula
    -  They are cheap
    -  Unlike SATA/SAS HDs, they are designed for portability, shock-resistance, etc., making them suitable for transport     -  With vchanger, they can be used in parallel and size can be scaled very easily
    -  USB maintains backward-compatibility for many years

Also, when USB 3.2 SSD is cheap enough, the change of medium requires zero changes to my setup. Current USB 3.1 SSD drives have > 200 MB/s write speeds and > 500 MB/s read, so I expect my off-site backup speeds to at least double in the next couple of years.
