Yes I am.  Sorry, when I say "rewind" it is only backtracking for maybe
one second or so to search for the end of the data, ready to append
again.

It is proper "shoe-shining", the drive behaves exactly the same if I
write data to it with another application but write too slowly.
Eventually the drive stops, rewinds a little, then gets ready to go
again when more data comes through.
