My recollection of similar problems is that I had a list of a number of allowed connections set too low someplace, and that a connection was already happening due to a database transaction. For example, I’d see something going on in mysqladmin processlist that would explain what connection was presently happening, and then trying another operation on the director wouldn’t work since I had that connection open already.
