I think Francisco's solution seems very elegant for a situation where tapes don't need to be shared between hosts. I've developed a crude system which might be another approach if you are mainly working with Full backups, which is to snapshot the catalog associated with a job so that the particular job can easily be recreated in another Postgresql instance. Let me know if you are interested in that. Following a brief discussion with Avi Rozen, who has developed the baculafs "catalog file system" I'm thinking of working on this more to make per-job sqlite dumps from Postgres to make entirely self-contained job catalogues, and to provide a facility to make a bootstrap file directly from either the Postgres or the job catalogue db.
