It might be that, after loading a tape, the tape drive needs more time to settle to working conditions. DLT can take up to a few minutes... in mtx-changer, there is a delay hard-coded after tape loading. You can either increase that time, or activate the wait_for_drive()-function. I'd prefer the latter.
