I tried this, bur I'm not 100% sure that I did i correctly.

Do you have an example of configuration files?

In this case Bacula running on Debian and FD under Windows XP over ADSL and a 
simple DLINK router. I think the DLINK isn't a "master" of keeping connections.

Try to set a heartbeat interval of a few minutes. There are probably 
routers in between the DIR and FD caceling the existing, but idle 
connection.
