Item Y: Max Recycles Origin: Tim Gray Date: 30 May 2007 Status: I dunno.
What: Enable tracking within bacula to record the number of times a volume has been recycled. Also, add an optional "Max Recycles" attribute to pool definitions so that after the number of times a volume has been recycled equals the "Max Recycles" the volume's status is set to "Retired" (new volstatus) and will no longer be recycled automatically by bacula. I don't think retiring should over-ride existing retention times. Why: Depending on the type of media, manufacturers usually rate their media for a certain number of writes/rewrites before the media is considered depleted and should not be relied on for backing up critical data. Currently there is no mechanism for keeping track of this within bacula. Adding this functionality will enable bacula admins to better manage the lifespan of the media and thus the reliability of one more aspect of their backup strategy. Item Y: Add volume Shelf-Time tracking to bacula. Origin: Tim Gray Date: 30 May 2007 Status: I dunno What: Enable bacula to track how long it has been since: 1. First write ever to a volume. 2. Time elapsed since last write to a volume Then use that information to retire tapes and/or notify the operator that one of the times has been exceeded. In case 1 notification/retiring would occur if a pool-based attribute of "Max VolServiceLife" is exceeded. In case 2 if "Max VolShelfLife" is exceeded. Why: Media has a shelf-life. Tapes, DVDs, and CDR/RW all have limited lifespans for how long the data written on them will keep until it degrades. This time is measured in years, of course, but if such media is being used within bacula to store such data indefinitely it would be extremely handy to be notified if writable media is about to expire so that a migration to another "fresher" media can be arranged. The reason I suggest seperating "Max VolServiceLife" and "Max VolShelfLife" is that some media might lost the data written on it over the course of years, but if new data is over-written onto it, it will keep that data for another full time frame as the first set of data. -- -- Flak Magnet (Tim) www.flakmagnet.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
