Which versions, which OSes?

Typically, when a client crashes during backup (or I restart it, or kill
the FD process) the SD and DIR notice that immediately. The timeouts for
the network conections, should they hang, default to two hours.

I can imagine that connections through firewalls or routers might not be
closed correctly in case a client crashes, but never experienced
anything like that.

 From the manual:

"FD Connect Timeout = <time>
where time is the time that the Director should continue attempting
to contact the File daemon to start a job, and after which the Director
will cancel the job. The default is 30 minutes.

SD Connect Timeout = <time>
where time is the time that the Director should continue attempting
to contact the Storage daemon to start a job, and after which the
Director will cancel the job. The default is 30 minutes."

These apply to the timeouts at connection setup, though - for
connections that ere being killed during operation, you have to rely on
the TCP/IP stack of the involved systems, I guess.
