Could you supply a few details of your ethernet card and its setup/firmware, 
driver versions, ...? Perhaps that will help the others have a base for 
something that does work.  Thanks.

PS: this tends to support my best guess that the problem is related to broken 
hardware/firmware, or possibly a system configuration parameter.
