Hi, I'm getting back to this issue on another customer, but here the two
machines that slow down
cannot be changed to Gigabit hardware as I did with the previous issue.
Because I'm starting to face this problem too frequently (on other
installations where the slow fd had so little data to write that the problem
was not interfering), I believe that I'm having a common problem on all of them.
Back then, you suggested me to check the autonegotiation on the switch, that
may actually make my ethernet card run at half-duplex. If this is the case, I
should see the machine (Solaris10 x86) show a console message during link-up
with an "half-duplex" setting. I checked the machine, and the console shows a
link-up in full-duplex mode.
Do you think that the switch may setup its port in half-duplex even if the x86
card says it's full-duplex?
If you think this may happen, is there any software tool that would let me
verify if the connection between two machines connected by the same switch is
running in full-duplex?
I already checked through 'netio' the transfer rate between various combination
of machines, and every one shows the same transfer rate of 10-11MB/s (both the
ones that runs a good-performance fd and the ones that runs a slow-performance
fd).
Thanx for any help.
Gabriele.

My best guess, from personal experience, is that faulty autonegotiation
is to blame. The combination I see arise from this most often is a
machine that is running full duplex and a switch that has autonegotiated
to half. For servers and static ports, I don't mess around with this
stuff and I hard code them both to remove all doubt.
