You say, about the "update slots" command , «assuming the drive is empty AND there is nothing actively attempting to using the drive ». The "update slots" command its not save because in order to bacula know which tape is in the slots, it needs to load all the tapes on the drive in order to read their labels, right?

When there is no barcode reader, yes.

If so, and saying that my tape loader can read barcodes and bacula is using them to label the tapes, can i say that in this case its safe even though its not the recommended way to do it?

No, even with a barcode reader, update slots attempts to unmount/unload tape drive 0 - if the drive is in use it will fail to run.

When you say «This behaviour is corrected in late 1.39 betas», you mean about the the mount issue?

According to Kern, it no longer unloads the tape drive and can be run while jobs are in progress.
