Quite possibly this was the problem with the FC4 to FC5 update, and I 
suspected that I might need to do an "install", but after the slip ups they 
made in FC4 updates, I vowed that if I had to do a "clean" install, it would 
be to another distro ...

Well, that would be *really* good news for users who are having problems with 
millions of files per Job.
