Having been working with LVM2 in the last few weeks, I'd say the that the snapshot facility would be better suited to your needs than running 4 hourly backups. It's far less CPU intensive, but requires a small amount of extra disk space and a small performance penalty (changed/deleted files are copied out into the snapshot area, so you need enough freespace to handle the changes).
