Helo Bacula-List,
a few days ago i was in a company and have seen a really great backup
principle. The backup software they use (i donĀ“t know the name of the
software) first transfer all data from the multiple clients to a
harddisk, which is on the backup host. after this, the backup software
starts to backup the data to a storage (tape drive).
This is usually called Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape aka D2D2T. There's also
hardware appliances which behave like a tape library to the software and
handle the actual data migration from disk to tape themselves, but
personally, I'd prefer a solution where the backup software handles this.
Alternatively, if you dont want to keep the data on the disk after the
backup is complete you can use "Data Spooling" in the current version
(1.38.9).
Works just like you describe it - caches the backup to disk, then writes
to tape once it's complete.
