Helo Bacula-List,
a few days ago i was in a company and have seen a really great backup
principle. The backup software they use (i don“t know the name of the
software) first transfer all data from the multiple clients to a
harddisk, which is on the backup host. after this, the backup software
starts to backup the data to a storage (tape drive).
This is usually called Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape aka D2D2T. There's also
hardware appliances which behave like a tape library to the software and
handle the actual data migration from disk to tape themselves, but
personally, I'd prefer a solution where the backup software handles this.
The main advantage
is, that the backup to the tape is really _fast_ because the backup
tape must not wait for data every time and get the data from a local
harddisk (harddisk are so cheap nowadays). Is this scenario possible
with bacula - or would that be not a gread feature for the best open
source backup software?
Wait for Bacula 1.40 - job migration should be implemented then, and as
far as I can tell it will allow such a setup.
You can find many interesting discussions in bacula-devel archives.
