I'm not really promoting pruning volumes manually ("manually" meaning "using bconsole's prune command", most likely from cron). I'm just saying that I've noticed this behaviour and that I've had to work around it. That being said: Our backup setup allows us to know the tape names prior to the actual backup. We do full backups on mondays to two tapes called "monday1" and "monday2" (surprise, surprise). We do incremental backups on Tuesday through Thursday to tapes named similarly. We also do full backups on Friday. For Friday we have four sets of two tapes which are used every four weeks. Unfortunately Bacula doesn't allow "every Xth week / day" in its schedules, so we have a pool containing all weekly tapes. Simply doing some math with the current date yields the names for the tapes that are due this week. Like I said, we have a very predictable rotation. This might be totally unusable in your situation.
