A DLT70 tape can only go into the DLT 7000 drive.

How can you specify that media type DLT40 can go into either drive?

David Boyes is trying to talk Kern into ;-) implementing configuration settings that allow for a list of media types and different lists for read/write operations.

I thought about this some time ago and the only real conclusion I came to was that it was easiest to only use higher capacity drives.

I did bring this up a couple of years ago. It does add more complexity.

However the reality is that our LTO2 drives are at the end of their support life - it's cheaper to replace them than to get extended support and while second hand drives might sound attractive, bear in mind

1: We have had _4_ warranty replacement drives in our HP MSL6060 2 drive
changer (Both original drives were DOA)

2: 2 daily-use Compaq TL820s DLT changers at 4 years old have each had
   4 warranty replacements.

3: A Sun L9 DLT changer has had no less than 5 new drives in 7 years.

4: Various standalone DDS3/DDS4/DLT drives have had to be replaced under
   warranty

I wouldn't get tape drives without extended warranty or a support contract...
