I would look at the logs on the client. I have a Windows XP client that I also backup regularly, and I see the same thing when there are files that the fd cannot read. I am pretty sure that the client starts off by stat-ing the file to get the file size, but then can't actually read the file when it comes time to copy it. Windows is refusing to let the fd access the file, so the fd returns a file of 0 length. I suspect that this is why the number of files is correct, but the number of bytes actually written is different. Well, I imagine that this depends on a couple of factors, the first of which is probably your backup destination. Are you backing up to tape? How good are the disks in the server/client? What database are you using? How fast is the drive that the database exists on? Are you spooling?
