One of the main reasons I don't use Debian is that they cater more toward a ultra stable system rather than being on the latest released software. As a consequence, they often lag quite far behind where I want to be ... The format of the data on the tape has not changed in over 3 years, and I don't expect that it will change in the near future. You can read more details about that in the Security chapter of the manual. Concerning your plan: it is hard for me to answer because I like to be on the latest released software, which for Bacula is currently 1.38.2 (or 1.38.3). Yes, there is a database upgrade needed between 1.36.3 and 1.38.x, but it is rather easy. There is no change in the format of the data on the volumes.
