mysql is listed here:
 /usr/portage/profiles/base/use.defaults

I think that means its set all the time... correct?

Would adding `mysqli' to /etc/make.conf help? Its supposed to tell
mysql dependant packages to use the improved mysql libs.

So when I install bacula shouldn't it know to use mysql and further
shouldn't some of the groundwork get done during install like creating
the user and group and providing an update *.0000cfg type file for
mysqlaccess.conf so that bacula can be added easily?

For a reinstall I'm setting these in /etc/portage/package.use:
  dev-db/mysql mysql mysqli
  dev-backup/bacula mysql mysqli

Shoud cover all basis...
