Kern told me that this directive is on its way out due to some
troublesome problems with the algorithms or something like that. I'd
take a look on the list -- not sure if I interpreted him correctly, but

Yes, the directive exists, but it is not used in the code.

Isn't that the development version, and 1.36 does honor that directive?
