Hello List,

where Kern Sibbald tried to explain why and how you should write or not
write to DVD.
I just wanted to summarize this here, to see if i understood it right,
and if someone else does it one of those ways.
I think there are 3 ways, please correct me if there are more and better
ways:
a) Check if the DVD is blank or not, then do the backup to dvd. Source:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=12193195
Sounds like a reasonable idea. Although, for minimal operator
intervention, some enhancements would be necessary, I think.
b) Write 650MB CD volumes and write them to a DVD with a script:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=11483865
I ddn't look up this mail (by the way - better us gmane.org than
sourceforges mail archive... the performance is much much better), but I
guess this would have the advantage to rely heavily on existing and
tested code, right?
c) Maybe the best way: Use a DVD-RAM Drive:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=9031377
Seriously the best solution. I also avoids the !§&(%&*§-ing
unreliability of DVD-/+R(W)... you are German, right? See one of the
last c'ts... my personal experience with DVD+RWs is, although limited,
not really positive. I'd suggest to use DVD as a backup media only if
you really can't afford anything better... even HD backup is preferrable
in my opinion.
I guess going for solution no. c) would be the best?!
If not c) then Misty`s script a) would be the way to go.
Last but not least way b)?
What do you think about the 3 ways i found?
I am very new to bacula, but i hope i found all the possible ways, and
that i judged them correctly.
My suggestions would be different...
Have a look at bimanager... I never used this, but it seems to be
reliable. CDs would be preferrable for reasons of security, but might
not offer the capacity you need.
DVD-RAM sounds good, too, but I have no experience with removable file
storage, but I'm sure you can use this. Others do, obviously.
Wait until bacula natively supports DVD.
Or, best solution in my opinion, invest in an externalhard drive or,
better, a tape drive.
Well, you wanted opinions :-)
Arno
Thanks, Mario
