Well, I guess I've got most everything except wxWidgets now. I have downloaded
wxWidgets and discovered some dependencies, notably GTK+. So I downloaded that
and discovered a number of dependencies. Fortunately, they are well-documented
on the Web, so I downloaded the following:

atk-1.9.0
gtk+-2.6.8
glib-2.6.5
jpeg-6b
libpng-1.2.8
pango-1.8.1
pkgconfig-0.15.0
tiff-v3.6.1

and, finally, of course, wxGTK-2.6.1

I got them all installed except the gtk+ package (and, of couse, wxGTK, which
requires it). When I run ./configure, it runs a long time, doing many things,
then finishes with this error:

  checking for glib-2.0 >= 2.6.0   atk >= 1.0.1   pango >= 1.8.0... Requested
'glib-2.0 >= 2.6.0'
  but version of GLib is 2.2.3

  configure: error: Library requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.6.0   atk >= 1.0.1
pango >= 1.8.0)
  not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your
libraries are
  in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

This puzzles me. It appears that my glib version (2.2.3) is within the required
limits of 2.0 through 2.6.0, yet I get an error. Moreover, the version I
downloaded and installed is version 2.6.5, which is even more recent. Using
YaST, I discovered that, of course, I had already installed glib version 2.2.3
from my SuSE distribution. I made to remove that version, but got a stern
warning from YaST that it was necessary to the functioning of Linux.

I realize that these problems are likely trivial to one who has spent as much
time with *nix as I have with NetWare, since it is just a matter of editing the
proper files, but it has become a major headache for me. I am beginning to
consider installing Red Hat on this box, since it appears to me that most, if
not all, of these problems will at least diminish under that OS.
