I experienced the same problem today.
For installation I used the binary rpms for RH9 (director) and SuSE9.2 (Client). The client also has a tape device DLT Autochanger) and backup to this works fine. Also locally backups on the director (DDS3) works.
The logfile shows:

I don't use xinetd for the bacula daemons. A netst -an shows:
