I think perl is probably the correct tool, it's horrible but available
more or less everywhere. A perl module which provided access to all
the important functionality of the bacula console would let people
hack together all kinds of automated scripts. 

Actually I have no idea why I did my script in /bin/sh, maybe I had
something off for lunch that day:-).
