Thank you for the suggestion, though I admit that am a bit reluctant to 
go even further out of my comfort zone and install yet another major 
piece of software with just enough difference to confuse me even further :-)

Already the idea of having to actually rebuild the mingw32 environment 
caught my by surprise - but I suppose under Linux, that is not too 
uncommon, which is OK if you are (or intend to take the time to become) 
a Linux guru - but there are other things on my plate, besides 'backup'.

It seems the initial objective of draining the swamp is being more and 
more obscured by all the ***** mosquitoes :-(

<sigh>
Surely there MUST be someone who actually does this cross compile - 
though understand all too well that if one keeps doing it in an 
established environment, many of the 'prerequisites' "just happen to be 
all set" from all of the earlier 'fixes', but if one has to start from 
scratch, some major 'musts' are missing.
