It's really easy to resize windows in Ubuntu. Hold alt and middleclick anywhere to resize in any direction. You don't need to hit the window border at all. Alt+leftclick moves the window, btw. This is just meant as a side note. I haven't tried the new feature you're discussing, but it seems like a very good solution to me. I've been a little bit annoyed by that. But I tested resizing a window in oneiric without pressing alt, and it is indeed a fight between the overlay scrollbar and the resize thingy.
