It seems that LT_INIT has been executed, the shell environment variables
enable_shared and enable_static are set to 'yes' if shared and/or static
libraries will be built. You can test these environment variables to
determine the parameter to pass to pkg-config.
but this cannot be done using the pkg-config autoconf macro, can it?
