This doesn't seem to do what you want.  `[ *\(.\)$],[\1]' will leave the
last trailing space, or strip non trailing whitespaces.

How about something like

[at_patsubst(at_patsubst(at_patsubst(at_patsubst([[[[$1]]]], [\\\n]),
                                     [[\n\t ]+], [ ]),
                         [ *$]),
             [^ *\(.*\)], [[\1]])])
