What about this fragment from acgeneral.m4 (~line 4407):
[[/\\$]]* | ?:[[/\\]]*) INSTALL="$ac_given_INSTALL" ;;
There, [[/\\$]]* is used instead of [[/\\]]*.
Seems like another workaround to this issue already crept into autoconf to me.
