Yep, I am, and I agree it's frightening.
Nevertheless I think that in the future, since we plan to rewrite most
of the compiler related macros, we should find a better layout and be
protected against this kind of horrors.
Meanwhile, I OK your patch. I'd accept patches that do what you
suggest too: have _AC_EXEEXT be independent from AC_LINK_IFELSE, have
AC_LINK|COMPILE_IFELSE require what they need, and finally, although
more care will be needed here, un-default ac_exeext and ac_objext.
