Very much.
I share the opinion that too long a configure --help is painful,
nevertheless, on this precise case it is the additional burden that we
put on the maintainer which makes me little excited with this.
In addition, a tool like Automake expects all the standard directories
to be defined, so I suppose that if ever Autoconf changes wrt this,
Automake will re-enable all these options.
Hence, I'm no big fan.
Or else, it should be Automake who should communicate something to
Autoconf. That's a new situation. Maybe Automake could create an m4
file with all the directories it needs. Kinda bizarre, it never
happened before. This would also open the possibility to have options
for other directories, but this is extremely controversial.
The cross-compilation case study is an excellent demonstration of nice
changes in Autoconf: everybody agrees that the change is required,
that the service is much better etc.
If we can reach such a feeling here, we will sure move to it, but I
don't think we can.
