It's just a nuisance when what is readily visible in Word is invisible
in OOo, regardless of whether it's in a *.ODT or *.DOC file format. That
means I HAVE to check the *.DOC file every time if I want to check and
see if a series of two or more spaces are possibly still present after
editing them in OOo without having it done automatically by OOo.
When I do a Find & Replace for finding them, it can also sometimes be a
bit hard to see just where the vertical cursor where they occur at line
breaks. But hitting Backspace or Delete will get rid of most of them,
even though I never see them in the first place. However, it's not so
easy when some moronic author uses a string of twenty or more
consecutive spaces for some reason or another, and none of them show up
in OOo.
Besides, a typical user is not going to be aware of many of the finer,
optional points of editing with OOo, and that makes it less useful in
this particular regard.

Judging by the number of duplicates, somebody on the development side
should reassess the priority on this one. /tj
