Right now that would not happen because they are marked as conflicting
packages so if you have vi you don't have edit or vice versa.

I can agree with this but it would have to be defined at the
distribution level indicating that `/usr/bin/edit` is reserved for
creating a symbolic link to the editor of your choice and (ideally)
that a tool exists to make or maintain the symbolic link. Right now
that is not defined and there is no tool that does it (automagically,
of course).
