I am working on a solution to show an error symbol for the failing parts (in a frame). It might take me a while to understand the dvips code which seems to act as fallback when there are failures. But I wanted to ask first if anyone knows how to generate previews without surrounding whitespace (in the current preview code) with preview-image-creator set to png or dvipng. This seems to be the default for inline equations and when I use dvisvgm, but not for display equations or floats with dvips, dvipng or even gs. Showing these previews with whitespace in frames is somewhat clunky for most equations. -- Al
