Ok, understood, BUT: I switch to main, then

 git describe  --tags

Returns

release_13_3-472-g3091f2ca


But [1]

 make -j


And I obtain 

(defconst AUCTeX-version "14.0.6.2024-06-30_22:58:10"
  "AUCTeX version.
If not a regular release, the date of the last change.")

So how on earth did _make_ jump from 13.3 to 14.0.6?
