You need to hold down the boot switch while booting to boot from SD card if the eMMC contains a msdos filesystem with MLO etc. If booting from eMMC fails or is skipped with the boot switch the SD card will be used as the boot device. http://www.elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack#BeagleBone_Black_Connector_and_Switch_Locations
