The previous PDP restricted formal policy input to the meetings and
PPML. The updated PDP expanded this to include recognized methods, with
the idea that the AC in consultation with the ARIN Board would be free
to explore newer approaches to gather community input on policy matters
and create new recognized methods. Later future PDP revisions might
explicitly note those newer methods after they have been defined and in
use as directed by the Board.
Over time we have developed the standards and norms around community
input, these for example include attribution, archival, and
transparency. For these and other reasons a statement on a random
website would not be a recognized method, but if the ARIN AC in
consultation with the Board decided to use a "web forum" to gather input
on policy matters that could be a new recognized method.
If the AC believes that to meet its goal of facilitating the policy
development process it would like to use a newer more modern platform,
my suggestion would be that AC after discussions/consultations with the
community on this matter make a request to the Board to trial a newer
platform with specific goals and attributes in mind to measure if the
newer platform provided better community input than current methods.
Hope this helps,
Andrew

Hi all,
I am grateful to those offering feedback here on the list.
Andrew - very glad that you've chimed in since you were so involved in
the development of the latest PDP. I'm glad that in your view the
Advisory Council does have some flexibility offered by the PDP to
include other methods of engagement. The one question I am a little
curious to tease out is what qualifies as "recognized methods".
As a document that empowers the community, my assumption would be that
it is meant as those methods recognized by the community. Is my
understanding more or less correct? And if so, how would you suggest
we develop the community's recognition of methods of engagement other
than to invite perspectives?
Thanks and best regards,
Matthew Wilder

Appreciate your feedback. This process does not preclude the
suggestion of new forms of engagement. Under question 5 there is
an “Other” box where you can share any new suggestions you might
have and this group is happy to take them.
This survey is the mid-point of this work - the policy engagement
workgroup solicited feedback for several months, inclusive of
public asks (and a table topic) at ARIN56. The items listed in the
survey were considered the most viable ones received after
discussion about support, time commitment, and responsibility. The
committee is also mindful of their purview - this group can’t
dictate staff’s (or the board’s) plans for engagement that they
are responsible for undertaking (a good example is revising the
mail system platform.) As a result, this list of questions focuses
on work the AC itself can undertake and perform.
But - you can 100% include your suggestions in the survey about
the things that you feel would be helpful in a broader context. If
that is a mail system upgrade, or some other item - then please,
we encourage you to include it. It will be heard and shared!
Hope that helps -
Doug

I appreciate that the AC is asking questions on how to
improve engagement.
Unfortunately, the survey seems to omit any new forms of
engagement, which seems odd given the goal.
If you’re looking to collaborate in 2026, the lowest
common denominator of a mailing list—circa 1990—should be
the first thing you look at.
A positive suggestion would be to run a trial of a modern
platform alongside a specific policy proposal to see if it
improves engagement.
Hoping you receive the feedback you’re looking for….

Please be reminded that the policy engagement working

hear your feedback. The survey - which remains open until
February 27 - is meant to allow community members to

Hello PPML Community -
The Advisory Council’s Policy Engagement Work Group
recently launched a survey to solicit feedback from
the community about your experiences in the policy
development process, as well as feedback on specific
suggestions for new methods of policy engagement that
we have received from the community over the last
several months. Since PPML is one of the primary
methods for policy engagement activity, we are sharing
this information with the community here as well as
numerous other channels.
The survey was launched today, and an associated blog
post with additional information has been posted to
_arin.net <http://arin.net/>_. The survey will take
about 5-7 minutes to complete.
If you would like to read the blog post (includes a

Your feedback is incredibly valuable to the process,
and we look forward to hearing from many of you!
