Dianne, I think you've missed a key aspect of the word 'task'. The use of the word derives from the idea of computer multi-tasking. In it's original CS sense, it means running several computer programs in a round-robin fashion so that each gets a slice of the processor. You're right that it has nothing to do with the more modern concepts of threads and processes. But it does have a very distinct and historical CS meaning, at least to the old timers who remember those early mainframe machines.
