I just received a new Dell laptop and it uses the hda_intel driver. So I'm stuck asking the same question that appears to have come up on the list every few months. How do I get the hda_intel driver to work right?
In my case I get PCM audio output (though it sounds tinny, I'm hoping that's a driver issue and not just crappy laptop speakers but I'm not too optimistic). However there are a number of problems with the mixer: a) There's no master volume slider. Only "Head" and "Front". What are these labels supposed to represent? Empirically "Head" controls the speaker level and the left headphone jack. "Front" controls the right headphone jack. Also the levels are off, it's almost muted as soon as the slider goes below about 80%. b) The PCM slider doesn't do anything. c) "Mic as Output" displays as a stereo slider but it's stuck at 0 and I can't adjust it. I can mute it or not but it doesn't actually cause output to appear on the mic jack. d) There's a stereo IEC958 slider that's tuck at 0 and doesn't appear to do anything either. e) "capture" shows up as a stereo slider too which is stuck at non-zero and non-equal levels. The left slider is at about 60% and the right slider at about 10%. f) Input Source also appears as a slider and it's stuck at 0 and stuck unmuted. g) Mux appears as a stereo slider suck at level 0 and 80% and unmuted. In short it seems like the hda_intel driver is not correctly setting up the information that alsamixergui uses to decide how to display the controls. It sort of looks to me like it's setting up some data structure intended for boolean and multistate options and then leaving the flags set for alsamixergui to display a slider. -- greg ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
