Each sound card is different. Some 100% is 0dB gain (e.g. snd-emu10k1), some 70% is more like 0dB gain (e.g. snd-ca0106). Soon, we will be presenting dB gain values in alsamixer, so that you will be able to determine where the mixer should be for 0dB gain. Currently, in the alsa hg repository, dB gain values are present for the snd-ca0106, snd-emu10k1 and snd-usbaudio modules. More sound cards will follow as developers add the appropriate information to each mixer control.
