As for the analogue stage. The sound output on motherboards is normally ok, the most common problem is the sound capture, with line-in being ok, but mic-in being terrible. It is purely a fault of the motherboard manufacturer, because an equivalent $10 PCI sound card turns out to be 100 times better at doing mic input.
